Alan Penney (left) and Alex Willis, both of Colvin Lodge 5374 which meets at Clacton on Sea, recently walked on ‘Hot Coals' to raise over £600  for St Helena Hospice in Colchester with, hopefully, more money to follow later. Alan is also a member of the Royal Arch Coronation Chapter No. 2063 and the Aurelius Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners and Mark Master Masons Lodges No. 814 which also meet in Clacton.

They were both so pleased how easy the walk went they decided to go to the back of the queue and walk on the coals again. In total 70 people walked on the coals raising over £10,000 for the St Helena Hospice charity in Colchester. A spokesperson said “More money usually comes in after the event so the final figure for money raised will be published later in the month.

Now if you are thinking that the 70th person to fire walk will find the coals well stamped on and cold compared to the first person walking – well that is not the case. The fire officer stops the walkers after every 4 or 5 in turn and rakes the coals to make sure they the heat is retained.

Alan and Alex both said they would do it again and are looking for their next way to raise money for charity or local good causes.
