Hutton Freemasons make hot news for Children’s Hospice

Sibelius Lodge No. 9448 spices-up fundraising for Little Havens with a Chilli Chip Challenge

In the run-up to Christmas, Paul Johnson and Jo, his wife, came up with a daunting charity challenge for Sibelius Lodge to raise funds for Little Havens Children’s Hospice. They organised a Chilli Chip Challenge event with four contestants who volunteered to test their taste buds and compete against fellow spice enthusiasts. The challenge was simple: Eat the hottest Carolina Reaper chilli chips and drink nothing for five minutes!

As one of the hottest peppers on earth, the Carolina Reaper, measures up to 2,200,000 heat units on the Scoville scale (SHU) compared to Thai Chilli’s 100,000 or the popular Jalapeno at 8,000 SHU. Paul and Jo provided the chips and had plenty of cold beverages on hand to help the contestants cool their mouths down after the event. All four proved they could take the heat and lasted the five minutes without drink.

The event took place at the Braintree and Bocking Constitutional Club and raised £600 for Little Havens which will be used towards specialist care and support for babies, children and young people living with complex or incurable conditions, from Essex and the surrounding boroughs, both in their homes and at the hospice in Rayleigh.

Bryan Longman, the secretary of Sibelius Lodge No. 9448, which has over 45 members who meet at Hutton Masonic Hall four times a year, said “We have long been supporters of the Hospice and they often come along to our Ladies Festivals as guests.” Bryan added “Well done to all those who took part and to Paul and Jo for raising an amazing amount of money for Little Havens.”
